How to introduce a rescue dog to your home

Training a rescue dog often works best when you break learning into small, achievable steps. You don’t want to confuse your dog by asking them to “sit” and “go to bed” during the same training session, instead focus on just one command at a time. Remember that consistency is key, and use positive reinforcement through treats, praise, or toys, depending on what your dog likes.  

Some rescue dogs struggle when left alone, especially if they’ve experienced abandonment or lots of change. If you notice your dog howling or crying when you leave the house, or even destructive behaviour, this could be a sign of separation anxiety.  

It can feel stressful and worrying when you see your dog displaying these behaviours, but there are some ways to help manage separation anxiety:  

• Encourage your dog to be more independent by leaving the room during meals.  

• Spend short periods of time in a different room or in the garden whilst your dog enjoys a treat inside to create a positive experience when you are out of the room. 

• Build up the time you leave your dog in a different room slowly, making sure they’re relaxed when on their own, and create positive associations along the way by using toys, chews or food puzzles.
