Home from Home®

You can view our available dogs on our website or by contacting the centres directly. A member of the team will be happy to talk to you about any suitable dogs and the Meet&Match® process. 

Once you have gone through our Meet&Match® process, we would welcome you to the centre to meet your match. We do not offer public viewing of kennels as it goes against the principles of our Meet&Match® system and can be detrimental to the welfare of the dogs in our care.

If you are meeting a dog through our Home from Home® scheme, we will arrange the visit at a neutral location, such as at one of our centres, your home, or an agreed outdoor space – whichever is in the best interests of the dog. You will never be asked to meet the previous owners or visit their home.

The number of visits can vary depending on the individual dog. The rehoming team will be able to advise you at the beginning of the Meet&Match® process.

No, the owners will bring the dog before you arrive and leave them with our team. You will meet the staff and the dog during your visit.  

Yes, dogs on our Home from Home® scheme receive the same thorough health checks and care as those in our centres. This includes microchipping, vaccinations, and flea and worm treatments where necessary. The only difference is that the dog will stay in their home rather than a kennel environment.

Yes, we carry out suitability checks prior to the dog going into its new home. This may be carried out remotely or by one of our experienced team visiting the home.

No, you would bring the dog back to Jerry Green Dog Rescue for us to arrange their care. This may be a foster home, returning to their previous owner if agreed, or a centre space.

Before being made available for rehoming, a member of the team will have completed a variety of assessments with the dogs on our Home from Home® scheme. The initial assessment takes place in the existing home, where the dog is more relaxed and comfortable. This allows us to see truer representation of the dog and their behaviour than we might see in an unfamiliar environment. Further assessments may then be completed at the centre or with the vets, the same way we would with a dog coming into centre for rehoming.  

The adoption process for Home from Home® dogs is the same as for centre-based dogs. The main difference is that, because the dog remains in their current home, arranging visits requires a little more planning to suit everyone’s availability. This rarely causes any delays and doesn’t affect the overall adoption process. 

If everyone involved has agreed you will be adopting a dog, congratulations, that’s wonderful news! Finalising an adoption is a joint process between you and Jerry Green Dog Rescue to make sure everything is in place to start your lives together. As part of this, we’ll ask you to: 

• Sign and return the adoption contract (along with any other supporting documents) 

• Transfer the dog’s microchip into your name 

• Pay the agreed adoption fee 

We’ll guide you through each step, so you’ll be completely supported. This way, we can work together to make sure your new companion is officially and happily part of your family. 

Every dog copes differently with the stress and excitement of moving to a new home. It can take a few days for them to adjust to new sights, sounds and smells, and it’s important to be prepared for this. Some dogs may be overly excited at first, while others might be clingier. All of this is normal, and our team is always available to offer advice and support during the settling-in period.  

All the dogs we rehome will have had a health check within the 3 months prior to adoption, in which any medical issues should have been identified. The team will inform you of any existing medical issues during the Meet&Match® process. You’ll also receive four weeks’ free PetPlan insurance post-adoption to cover illness or injury. If you are concerned about your dog’s health after adoption, please do contact the team. 

We know how difficult a decision this is to make, but we’re here to help. We recommend contacting your nearest centre or completing this form, so our compassionate team can assist you through the process. 

Once we have more information about your dog, we will be able to advise whether your dog can proceed on our Home from Home® scheme. This will also be dependent on your circumstances and reason for relinquishment, so we may also consider centre intake if it is in the best interests of the dog. 

Home from Home® is a scheme which enables your dog to stay with you in your home whilst we search for a suitable match. This means your dog will be rehomed straight from your care, rather than coming into centre care.  

The main benefit of rehoming your dog through our Home from Home® scheme is that it can be stressful and better for your dog’s welfare to remain in the home whilst waiting for their new family.  

We typically work within an hour radius of our centres; however, we sometimes work further afield but may request your help with some of the dog’s transport.  

Requests for a dog to be rehomed on the Home from Home® scheme can be made via our rehoming enquiry form on the Jerry Green Dog Rescue website, by phone, or by email. 

An intake form will be sent out to you via email or post for completion and return to Jerry Green Dog Rescue, along with a current picture of your dog. On return of this information, we will call to ask you for any more necessary details and to book a home assessment with the dog.  

Before the assessment, we’ll send you an email with a brief outline of what to expect. When we visit your home, we’ll start by chatting with you about your dog’s character and behaviour, and you’ll then introduce us to your dog in a way that feels comfortable for them. We’ll see how they interact with a new person, behave in the home, and get along with any other pets or children you might have.  We’ll also take them for a short walk to see how they respond outside the home.  

At the end of the visit, our team will explain the next steps of the process; this might include further assessments at home or at our centre, a vet check-up, or we may feel ready to place them up for rehoming. Every assessment is tailored to the individual dog, ensuring the process is right for them.  

Whilst we can’t say exactly how long it will take to rehome your dog; our team will keep you well informed throughout the process. We can sometimes advise whether your dog is likely to find a home quickly or if it may take a little longer to find the perfect match.  

At the home assessment we ask that any potential adopters, including ones that you may find, still come through Jerry Green Dog Rescue to go through our process. It is peace of mind that Jerry Green Dog Rescue will be there to support your dog and potential adopters throughout the rehoming process, and should the unfortunate happen that the home is unsuccessful, then Jerry Green Dog Rescue is on hand to find another alternative.

We start by writing up assessments, gathering vet history and photos, then creating a description to share on our website and social media. Our team handles all enquiries, speaking with potential adopters in detail before arranging any Meet&Match® visits. These take place in a neutral location, where both you and the adopter remain anonymous, as we are the point of contact throughout.  

Meet&Match® visits take place at a neutral location, which could be at one of our centres, the potential adopter’s home, or at an agreed outdoor space – whichever is in the best interests of the dog. We will never ask you to have an adopter come to your home to meet the dog. 

Lack of transport does not prevent rehoming a dog through Home from Home®. If you can help us with transport to the centre or to the vets, this is extremely helpful and can make the rehoming process quicker and smoother. 

We’ll do our best to arrange visits at the pre-agreed location on days that suit both you and the potential adopters. Our standard visiting hours are between 11am and 2pm, but rest assured we’ll always check your availability before confirming any appointments. 

The number of Meet&Match® visits depends on the dog; their confidence in meeting new people, creating new bonds, and how many family members, dogs, or children they may need to meet in their potential home. Your dedicated team member will give you an idea of how many visits are likely and will keep you updated after each one. 

Not directly, but we do welcome your input. You’re encouraged to share details about what you feel would make the ideal home for your dog. While we can’t involve you in the final selection process, we can let you know general details – such as whether their new family has a garden or other pets. 

We keep in regular contact with our adopters, particularly within the first month of adoption. Whilst we can’t share all the details about their new home, we will be able to tell you the type of home they have gone to and how they are settling in. Many adopters will send us photo or video updates and if they give us permission we may be able to share these with you too. 

We kindly ask for a donation once the Home from Home® process is complete, this helps us to continue our work in finding safe, loving homes for more dogs in need.  

Yes, we will not share any personal details.  

We understand how important peace of mind is during this process. If you’d like the option to have your dog returned to you should things not work out, we’re happy to note that as a preference. Just let one of our team members know, and we’ll stay in regular contact to keep you reassured every step of the way.
