Will you help a dog like Heather get the care they need?
I’m Heather, a young Lurcher who loves digging, zoomies and laying belly up in the spring sunshine. Today I’m asking, as a dog-lover, will you help give £50 to help care for a dog like me?
I remember the cold nights, my tummy growling with hunger, and wandering for miles, always hoping to find a friend.
One day, I thought I had found a companion to walk beside me through life. He showed me what I thought was love. But it didn’t last. I was caught out – pregnant in my very first season. He disappeared. And I was alone again.
Recently, a kind stranger scooped me up and took me to the vet. I lay frozen with fear as cold jelly was spread across my belly. But then I saw them – little pups wriggling on the ultrasound screen.
The vet cleaned me up and told me I was going to go somewhere called Jerry Green Dog Rescue.
I was terrified when I arrived. I curled up in the van, refusing to move. I didn’t know who to trust. But a gentle voice coaxed me forward. Laura – a Dog Welfare Assistant – she didn’t rush me. Laura just let me be scared, and waited with patience and kindness, until I felt brave enough to step inside.
Inside, in the far corner, was a whelping box, lined with layers of soft sheets and towels – warm, comfortable, and welcoming.
Blankets scattered in other corners of the room, giving me the choice of where to rest, it’s like they knew that I like to stretch out flat. The air smelled clean. There was a bowl of still, cold water too. There was even a big window that let in the bright sunlight.
For the first time in my life, I felt like someone had thought of me.
On my first day, Laura kept popping by for short bursts of time. She knew I was feeling stressed and wary of people. Sometimes she’d bring me some yummy chicken flavour treats, and sit quietly with me, speaking with her soft voice. I started to trust her.
I grew restless. My body ached. My belly tightened and spasmed. I crept over to the whelping box and Laura was there in seconds. A comforting presence by my side, Laura stroked my fur reassuringly as I brought my puppies into the world. Laura made me feel safe.
Five puppies arrived within one hour. I cleaned them, fed them, loved them, like I’d done it all before. And by teatime that Sunday, I surprised everyone and myself when four more came along. I’d given birth to NINE puppies! Seven boys. Two girls. Each one a miracle.
