When a dog arrives at Jerry Green Dog Rescue, their story often begins long before they reach us. Some come from homes experiencing unexpected changes, while others arrive after facing heartbreaking neglect or abandonment.

At Christmas, a time filled with warmth and celebration, the journey towards safety and love can feel especially meaningful. As the outside world prepares to enjoy the festive season, many dogs are taking their first steps towards a brighter future of their own.

One of those dogs is Bambi, a Cane Corso puppy whose story reflects the journey many rescue dogs take, and shows exactly how your kindness creates a safe second chance when it’s needed most.

The Call for Help

Our team responds to around 223 calls every month; each one has a dog in need at the heart of it.

One of those calls was about Bambi. She had been found in a tiny flat, confined to a soiled crate and surviving on only rice. A kind stranger discovered her hungry, frightened and covered in her own mess. They couldn’t keep her, but they wanted her to be safe.

They began calling rescue centres, and because of supporters like you, we were able to say yes.

That “yes” is the very first step in every rescue dog’s journey.

Stepping Into Safety

For any pup, arriving at a dog rescue centre can be overwhelming, but especially for those who have never known safety.

When Bambi arrived, her world was suddenly filled with new sounds, new smells, and unfamiliar people. She was terrified of what lay ahead.

But she was gently welcomed by Beth, a Senior Dog Welfare Assistant, who settled her in with a warm bed, fluffy blankets and soft toys. That first night, Bambi hid behind her bed, too overwhelmed to sleep – but her journey to recovery had finally begun.

Finding Peace in Foster Care

The next morning, Bambi recognised Beth’s voice. This time, Beth had come to take her into foster care, a calmer environment where Bambi could begin to settle.

Beth’s home was set up with a play pen and all the essential comforts borrowed from the centre. For the first time, Bambi could relax and dream about life in a forever home – a far cry from what she’d ever known.

Foster care often plays a crucial role in a rescue dog’s progress. It gives dogs like Bambi the chance to build confidence, understand routine and begin preparing for the family they will one day be a part of.

Expert Care Comes at a Cost

To give a rescue dog the future they deserve, we need to understand the full extent of their needs.

For Bambi, a series of vet visits soon uncovered the heartbreaking impact of her early neglect. Her poor diet and living conditions had caused severe leg deformities, and expensive surgery would be her only hope for a life without chronic pain.  

This level of expert care is vital – but it comes at significant cost.
It can cost up to £4,000 to provide surgery, aftercare and ongoing support for a dog like Bambi.
